What kind of hearing aids would work best for me?

big hearing aid

Hearing aids come in various styles, features, and technology levels to suit different needs and preferences. Choosing the right hearing aid can be overwhelming. You might wonder, “What kind of hearing aids would work best for me?”

The most critical step in determining the best hearing aid for your needs is to have a basic understanding of your unique hearing loss and how hearing aids work.

In this blog, we will cover important factors to consider when selecting a hearing aid and help you find the one that fits your hearing loss, lifestyle, and budget.

Whether you have a mild hearing loss or severe, there is a hearing aid that can help improve your hearing and enhance your quality of life.

Understanding how hearing aids work

Hearing aids work by amplifying sounds and making them louder and clearer for the wearer.

Hearing aids come in three major parts:

  1. Microphone: responsible for picking up sounds
  2. Amplifier: increases the volume of sounds
  3. Speaker: responsible for delivering amplified sound to the ears

If before, hearing aids were associated with bulky pieces that practically screamed “I am a hearing device!”, modern hearing aids are now designed to be more compact and aesthetic. Some hearing aids can even pass as earbuds or what most people call “earwear.”

Hearing aid styles

You should also be familiar with the different hearing aid styles so it will be easier for you to choose what you would like to use. Keep in mind that you will be using your hearing aid most of the time, so you must choose one that you are happy and comfortable with.

Below are the different styles available:

  • Behind-the-Ear (BTE): BTE hearing aids sit behind the ear and use a tube to direct sound into the ear canal. They are the largest style of hearing aids, but they are also the most versatile and can be used to treat a wide range of hearing losses.
  • In-the-Canal (ITC): ITC hearing aids are similar to ITE, but are smaller and fit more comfortably inside the ear canal. They are less visible than ITE hearing aids, but may not be suitable for people with severe hearing loss.
  • In-the-Ear (ITE): ITE hearing aids fit inside the outer ear and are visible. They are larger than other styles of hearing aids, but they can also be more powerful.
  • Receiver-in-the-Canal (RIC): RIC hearing aids have a small speaker located in the ear canal and a larger control unit behind the ear. They are less visible than BTE hearing aids and are often more comfortable to wear.
  • Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC): CIC hearing aids are the smallest style of hearing aid and fit deep inside the ear canal. They are almost invisible, but may not be suitable for everyone.

If you’re still unsure of what kind of hearing aid would work best for you, consult with an audiologist. They can help recommend the ideal hearing aid for you based on data gathered from your hearing test, screenings, and/or evaluation.
